“Success in the Channel is not about conquering the water, but about conquering yourself.”
-Des Renford; Nothing Great is Easy
Christian Renford's story is one of legacy and passion for sport, intertwined with the icy currents of the English Channel.
Born into a family of renowned swimmers, Christian carries the torch passed down by his grandfather, Des Renford, and his uncle, Michael (Murph) Renford. Des is one of Australia’s greatest long distance swimmers and the first Australian to cross the English Channel from England to France, going on to make 19 crossings in as many attempts.
Inspired by their achievements, Christian is set to make history as the first third-generation swimmer to conquer the Channel.
This journey is more than a personal goal; it's a tribute to his heritage while carving out his own path.
A Family Tradition
The Renford name is synonymous with open water swimming. Des Renford's legendary swims set the bar high, with his endurance and determination. His relentless pursuit of greatness and his record-setting swims across the English Channel have inspired generations of open water swimmers.
Murph continued this tradition, carving out his own place in the annals of open water swimming completing the Triple Crown of open water swimming in 2011.
Now, Christian is set to take this legacy to new heights and make history with his attempt to become the first third-generation swimmer to conquer the English Channel.
The Challenge Ahead
Crossing the English Channel is considered one of the most gruelling challenges in open water swimming. The unpredictable weather, frigid waters, and strong currents test even the most seasoned swimmers.
Christian's attempt is not just about personal achievement; it's about honouring his family's legacy and pushing the boundaries of what is possible.
Training and Preparation
Christian's preparation for this prodigious swim has been nothing short of rigorous. He has spent countless hours in the water, swimming long distances, braving cold temperatures, and training in conditions that mirror those of the Channel.
Supported by a team of experts, including coach and 2021 Australian Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame inductee Vlad Mravec, and one of Australia’s leading Sports & Exercise Physiotherapists Brent Kirkbride, Christian is leaving no stone unturned in his quest to make history.
